Georgetown –  GEPAN dispatched boxes of stationery to the Rupununi, (Region 9, Guyana), mainly with the objective of supporting the CSEC class of 2018.

Stationery included notebooks and composition books, pens, writing paper and folders, as well as work books to support Mathematics and Industrial Arts /Technology classes.

Recycled Primary School workbooks were also donated to the same village so that children who are unable to purchase these can have access to the basics such as Social Studies, English Literature and Grammar, Mathematics, etc.

Vision Guyana partnered up with GEPAN to make a significant donation of stationery, while recycled workbooks were donated by Oxford Flight Training and Danbury Flight Training, Ct, USA. We extend our heartfelt thanks and appreciation to them for helping us to make this initiative possible.

The boxes were delivered to the District Development Officer (DDO) for Sand Creek, Mr. Fredley John, by the Regional Democratic Council represented by Mr. Bryan Allicock who is the Regional Chairman for Region 9.

The Village of Sand Creek is comprised mainly of members of the Wapishana nation and is located in the Deep South Rupununi. As is the case in most indigenous communities in Region 9, families in Sand Creek are affected by struggling village economies, low incomes and financial difficulties when sending their children to school. This is partly why performance and pass rates of hinterland Schools in Guyana are highly challenged.

We found these cool folders which read “A negative thinker sees a difficulty in every opportunity; A positive thinker sees an opportunity in every difficulty.”

This initiative is one of many that GEPAN undertook to support education in rural and hinterland communities. However, accessing the deep hinterland is particularly difficult due to a combination of geographical, financial and logistical constraints. This is why partnerships are strategic in expanding our reach and support to far-off populations.
