Putting one’s hands on updated statistics in Guyana is quite a difficult task, for the simple reason that data is at least 2 years old. In addition, data on the status of women and children in Guyana is even more difficult to obtain. Below are 2 documents with compiled UN data on the status of women and children in Guyana.

This information is the most recent we could get our hands on. However, one must bear in mind that due to the different data collection periods involved, they might differ to some extent from the reality on the ground. Also, it is important to note that statistics in general do not always consider qualitative factors accounting for human development, and as such do not always relect reality.

Nevertheless, because statistics are a quantitative mesure of a country’s socio-economic development, they provide important indicators for policy and decision makers, including academics, politicians, economics and nationals and international institutions and organisations.

Consequently, the information below serves as a valuable reference for attempting to assess the current situation of Guyanese women and children.

Ideally, we would like to portray the evolution of the situation of Guyanese women and children for as far back as we can obtain data, regardless of how much time it takes!

UN STATS CHILDREN GUYANA

UN STATS WOMEN GUYANA

Note: Two things stand out for us in the attached data:

i. The level of violent discipline for children

ii. The level of justification of wife-beating per different category / tranch
